THIS BOOK is an attempt to gather into a single volume all the specialised knowledge and experience which a master and his deck officers require if they are to operate bulk carriers safely and efficiently. The emphasis throughout is on the dry bulk trades, and matters such as navigation, ship handling and safety have in general been discussed only where they apply specifically to bulk carriers. The reader has been assumed to have an adequate knowledge of ships, seamanship, navigation, stability and nautical terms, but no previous experience of bulk carriers. Every effort has been made to use plain English for the benefit of the many seafarers for whom English is a second language.
